What is the student partnership program?

It is an administrative scheme aimed at increasing the number of overseas students enrolling in Canadian universities. In 2009, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) developed the Student Partners Program, or SPP. It is a shortened visa application process with a processing period of 10 working days. There is no need to provide bank history as proof of financial assistance. SPP includes more than 40 institutions and colleges. With a few exceptions, the majority of SPP institutions conduct technical courses and provide certificates and degrees. The Student Partners Program (SPP) was recently phased down in favour of the Student Direct Stream Program (SDS). To be eligible for the SDS program, you must meet certain criteria.

  1. Undergraduate degrees with an overall IELTS exam score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5, and postgraduate degrees with an overall IELTS exam score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 given in the previous 24 months. Undergraduate degrees should have a study gap of no more than two years, with some exceptions up to three years, and postgraduate degrees should have a study gap of no more than five years, with some exceptions with high marks and a six-year gap.
  2. The program you’re applying for must be compatible to your past education and add value to it.
  3. In their most recently finished diploma or degree, the student should have an overall minimum score of 50%. Proof of one-semester or one-year tuition payment (as asked by the SPP institution). The purchase of a $10,000 CAD Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from Scotia Bank to support living expenses during your first year in Canada. If you have previously been refused Canadian student visa, you are not eligible to apply under SPP.
